Daily Covet: Retro jean skirt

All my cleaning out and purging this past week has left me wanting a bit of nostalgia.

Retro for me generally brings me back to what I wore in high school. The dress code in Southern California was casual, to say the least. In fact, many days I looked like I rolled out of bed into athletic shorts (volleyball-style Mossimos and Quicksilver shorts were our go-tos at the time) and a “matching” t-shirt.

But some days, we’d really go all out and slip into a Guess jean skirt – mini, of course.

It occurred to me recently how versatile denim skirts really are. Back in the day, they were ideal for showing off our year-round tan, but these days they are likely to show off my every-day-is-a-casual-day life.

Obviously, there is no shortage of cute, denim skirts in an array of styles and washes. Leave it to Guess to have a very similar version to the one I wore more than 20 years ago.

Daily Covet: Rag & Bone Dre in Bradford Jeans

It’s time for jeans. New Jeans.

Last year, I was two days out from giving birth and still in the “little black sweats” phase of post-pregnancy. I wasn’t even thinking about wearing my old jeans… much less close to fitting into them.

This year, I’m still a few pounds away, but hey it’s only July (almost August.) But there is an end in sight and to celebrate I’d love to invest in a hot, new pair of I’ll-look-fabulous-most-days-in-these-jeans jeans.

I have a few pairs of fab jeans already… a really, lovely worn-in-perfectly pair of Joe’s boot-cut jeans. I have two great pairs of dark skinny jeans. And I also have a great pair of low rise, frayed jeans, which are the original Seven for All Mankind when they weren’t made in China… buuuut, I might be a little further from wearing those.

I do not, however, own a cool pair of boyfriend jeans with the perfect fade. That’s why these Rag & Bone jeans are perfect for this girl on the hunt for jeans!

But honestly, jean schmean, I’d take just about anything Rag & Bone has to offer! #newfavedesigner

Daily Covet: Modern Tartan Jacket

Plaid.  It reminds me of Catholic schoolgirl uniforms and Scottish kilts.

But here, a cute tartan jacket with an origami shape is super modern.  These tartan jackets are the granddaughters of the wool windowpane blazers of the 90’s.  Thankfully they are lighter, more flattering and frankly, far more chic than their predecessors.

I love them paired with skinny jeans and pumps like Nordstrom shows it here.  But it would be a great holiday outfit with black satin pants.  Or schoolgirl meets biker chick with a fitted leather skirt — leather is all the rage this fall!

It’s also on the very affordable end of the spectrum too… always a bonus!

Daily Covet: Schoolboy Blazer

With a schoolboy blazer for fall, you can go virtually anywhere.

Wear a schoolboy blazer to work with a pencil skirt.  Wear a schoolboy blazer on a date with jeans and heels.  Or wear a schoolboy blazer over a pair of cargo pants to run your weekend errands.

No matter where you wear your blazer, you’ll look polished and stylish.

I have a navy velvet blazer, but am on the hunt for a charcoal or black schoolboy blazer, nipped in at the waist, that I can wear with the sleeves rolled or not.

This cute TALULA shrunken blazer from Aritzia is perfect for my needs, and it’s inexpensive too!

What’s your must-have item for fall dressing?

Daily Covet: Jeans for Dancing

In a couple of weeks, I will have my first dance recital in 33 years.

The dance school I attend allows the adult class to choose “costumes” from our closet, meaning we don’t have to buy cute, pink tu-tus  and pillbox hats with sequins.

My dancemates have chosen jeans and sequined tops for our tap number, and that immediately poses a problem. I either have long, boot-cut jeans that would hang madly over my tap shoes… or I have skinny jeans that I wouldn’t wear with a t-shirt (I need something a little longer and looser for balance.)

So, I’m thinking a cute boyfriend jean rolled up with whatever top we decide, would be perfect for this year’s recital. This pair of midweight sexy boyfriend jeans from GAP are not only adorable, but easy on the budget too.
