The Bar Business

So I was walking through Homegoods the other day trying to kill time before picking my littlest one up from pre-school, and I found this amazing lucite bar cart. It was all see-through and squatty and kind of bubble-y looking and I loved it.

But for $300 at Christmas time, it was more appropriately put on my Christmas list and NOT my shopping list. Boo!

But it quickly became the inspiration for a hot chocolate-fueled frenzy of bar cart searching the following evening. Not only did I find an even more perfect bar cart, I realized that $300 in the world of bar carts is pretty reasonable after all. Who knew?

If any of you remember my absolute addiction to all things Mad Men (see here… and here…and here), you may understand my retro bar cart obsession a little better.

So, this is the bar cart I landed on and my $300 obsession is now a healthy $1700 obsession… leave it to me to inadvertently pick the most expensive item on the page every. single. time.

With that said, my bar cart search also led me to another little bar-specific covet: an agate bottle opener. How sweet and petite is this little opener at Anthropologie?

Playing the Blues

Ok, so I’ve curated lots of cool blue items while on my search for the perfect deep blue, velvet sofa – some of which might make excellent gifts for your loved ones, BTW.

I’m not sure blue ever goes out per se. Luckily, for those of us that adore all things blue, it seems there’s a trendy shade in the lineup of popular pantones pretty much every year.

But I’m particularly into a jewel-toned sapphire hue, which looks even richer when paired with the hot metal of the moment – gold.

Daily Covet: Table, tables and more tables

My two older kids have started back to school this week – don’t get me started on how early this is – and I have been inspired to start working on my house.

I love this house so much, but it’s getting awfully crowded in here. We’ve looked for years at other homes in our neighborhood and have yet to find anything we love nearly as much. So, while we are deciding whether to stay and add on or sell at some point, we are trying to maximize the space we do have.

To help make space, I’ve decided that some stuff needs to go or at least be relocated to a better spot. I’d also like to replace some things that aren’t my favorite or repurpose them. I’ve been fortunate enough to inherit a lot of beautiful furniture, but am really getting to the point where I want to thoughtfully decorate and arrange my own spaces with things that I love.

Fast forward to a new rug. I took out a traditional floral rug in black and switched it with a more modern rug. It’s actually mid-century-ish in turquoise, navy, beige and gold tones that match my walls, sofa and darker antique furniture. I thought it would be the perfect addition to the room and force me to update. It was also sooo inexpensive, so I won’t be a freak about having my family actually “live” with it and on it – ok, less of a freak.

So now, I’m looking to replace some other dark antiques with lighter pieces. This clear glass coffee table is definitely more modern than the dark table I have now. And it’s the perfect piece to show off my new rug while still providing me with a space for flowers, my beautiful coffee table books and for drinks when we have company.

Next, I’d like some new occasion tables with a modern edge and a little bling. So far, my favorites are these two sets. I love the “bamboo” legs and pale, gold metal of the first ones and they are a great mix of traditional and modern.

I absolutely adore the second set too and feel like they would pop against the rug. And they are also so affordable! The only downside to these tables, fingerprints. I’m going to have to get much more regular about cleaning up fingerprints!

With exception of the rug, I haven’t pulled the trigger on anything yet. But at least I’m moving in the direction of creating a space that I absolutely love. Next up, lamps, pendants and sconces….

Daily Covet: Safavieh Logan X Side Chair

The Safavieh Logan X Side Chair is a modern-day replica of the most popular cafe chairs of Europe. Small-ish in size, these dining chairs were popularized by Thonet’s 19th Century Brentwood aesthetic. My favorite part of these chairs is where the curved metal “X” meets the seat of the chair.

I currently have a farmhouse-style kitchen table set on casters that is slightly longer and slightly narrower than most dining tables. I would love to update the upholstered bench and two farmhouse chairs that surround my beloved table. The distressing makes them rustic, and the basket-weaved seats that are slightly more cush than a solid wood seat.

So while I’m replacing furniture, why not a makeover? I’m also loving these Philippe Starck sconces!

Daily Covet: Proximity Console Table

Well, the holidays have come and gone, and we are still organizing and moving things around now that our decorations have been put away.

I’ve mentioned my living room in other posts – it’s long and narrow and although I want to move things around, I’m just not sure how to accomodate the furniture that we do have (maybe pull some out?)

Either way, we are in desperate need of some book shelves and also an “anchor” of sorts for our sofa. When our straw-colored velvet sofa isn’t up against the wall, it tends to slide – or get pushed – backward. This beautiful Proximity console table, which would allow us to house our favorite books and some regularly played board games, would also provide our couch with something to butt up against.

I recently purchased several lamps with this same brushed-bronze finish to match. Now if I could pull together everything else, I’d be in good shape…

Daily Covet: Anthropologie Willoughby Sofa

I need a new sofa.

Well, I need another sofa.

I love the sofa I have, but I am dying to add some bold color to my otherwise subdued living room.  And on a rainy day this week, I spent the day moving my furniture around and around to no avail.

This is the Willoughby sofa I have my eye on… in fact, Anthropologie has a whole gaggle of furniture I wouldn’t mind adding to my maison.

Take a good look at this lucious velvet sofa.  Isn’t it delish?
