Falling for Seasonal Décor

It’s suddenly turned cold here in Middle America and it has me considering how I might mix things up when it comes to my home décor. My color scheme is pretty light with pale blues, greens and a creamy white the rest of the year. However, overcast skies, cool rains and dropping temperatures make me want to make things a little cozier inside.

So how do I do this without trading in all my light-colored furniture and accessories for deep, rich colors and plush fabrics? Luckily, I have a few ideas that won’t break the bank or force me into redecorating my entire home.

  1. Throw pillows. Why not pull all my polished cotton and linen-covered throw pillows in turquoise and green, and swap them out for plush velvet or even silk with some embellishments?
  2. Fall tablescapes. Green sprigs, Satin ribbons, brilliant fall fruits and plenty of candles are all good ways to transform your home for the season. If you’ve got a set (or two or three!) of inherited dishes packed away like I do, pull out the ones with the gold bands or festive apples on them to use for the season.
  3. Welcome mat. Welcome friends and family with a fall or holiday-inspired mat at your front door.
  4. Faux fur throws. Make sure there is the plushest of covers draped across your favorite reading chair or a sofa you love to stretch out on. It should be convenient enough to grab if a chill suddenly comes on.
  5. Blooms. Mums or any other fall flowers in deep reds, oranges and gold are perfect for your front porch or your dining table. You can always create a really dramatic arrangement for your mantle too. Combine them with gourds, pumpkins and apples for even more color and texture.
  6. Candles. Choose tons of white pillars in multiple heights or light a single holiday-smelling candle in your kitchen. You can also put a bunch of tea lights out in a variety of candle holders – notice the cored out apples!
  7. Indoor rugs. Your everyday rugs might be very expensive or hard to move, but if they aren’t or you just want to swap out some of the smaller rugs around, this is an easy way to add fall shades to your home. Places like HomeGoods have rugs of all shapes and sizes at affordable prices. You may even want to keep them out all year  ’round.
  8. Outdoor spaces. Use your porch or a sunroom as an extension of your home’s square footage. You can always add throws, pillows and rugs to those areas, as well as pretty potted plants in seasonal containers. Plus you can show them off to all the neighbors too!

Hopefully, I’ll tackle some of these in the next few weeks. How about you? What do you do to get your home ready for colder weather? Share some of your favorite ways to welcome the new season into your home in the comments.

Valentine’s Day: the holiday most people hate

Most people I know absolutely detest Valentine’s Day. Whether it’s the ridiculous excuse to demand another gift from your SO or the fact that you seem to be uncannily S-O-less every time Valentine’s Day rolls around, this holiday ranks right up there with a root canal or digging sharpened pencils into your palms.

BUT, why not love the colors of love?

Red, fuchsia, pink, merlot…. there are so many gorgeous shades of Valentine-worthy dresses out there to choose from.

Wear them with your Valentine. Wear them to find a Valentine. Or wear them to swear off any more Valentines with your best gal pals instead.

But don’t skip an opportunity to show off your bad self in one of these AB FAB colors for a night!

Daily Covet: Tailored Dress

Having three little boys at home does wonders for your social life… and not in a good way. My husband and I no longer make big plans for NYE, but instead, stay home and play games or watch movies with our brood. Most years, I’m lucky to be up when the clock strikes midnight.

But if I were heading out to overindulge on delicious cocktails or mouth-watering steak frites with bernaise sauce – or more likely all of the above, a new dress I would surely need.

This tailored dress from & Other Stories would be perfect. While it’s not overtly sexy and it’s not covered in sequins like typical NYE ensembles, it wreaks of sophistication and reminds me a little bit of Sally Albright’s dress from the mother of all NYE parties in Harry Met Sally (a party of such proportions that it only happens in the movies!)

I adore the full skirt, the deep v-neck and of course, the stunning emerald color. How could you go wrong?

Daily Covet: A Pergola

You might find this so random, but today I am coveting a Pergola.

We had the lovliest time on the back deck of some friend’s of ours last night. They had little round lights outlining the deck, which provided the perfect amount of ambient lighting for late night cocktails on a hot, summer night.

We too, have a fabulous outdoor space for entertaining and while it’s practically perfect in every way, I have this vision for a gorgeous pergola to semi-cover our patio.  I want it to be strung with little white lights and maybe even have a ceiling fan to keep us cool when it gets beastly hot in August.

I also want it to have the same ivy growing in and around it just like I have crawling up the walls of my home.

What an outdoor paradise in the canopy of tiny lights and lush greenery!

This one is absolutely gorgeous and is like adding square footage to your living space. But maybe too-muchy like being in your family room.

I love the lights and the chandalier, presumably with votives for extra mood lighting.

But this space is absolutely UH-MAZING! I must admit however, that it may not be just the pergola that has me so in love… it might also be the stone patio and the table for dining al fresco.

Daily Covet: Kate Spade Salt & Pepper Set

HOW CUTE ARE THESE SALT AND PEPPER SHAKERS?!  (And how about two posts in a row this week?)  But how cute are these really?

Yes, I’m totally screaming that!  I’m so in love with navy and gold right now and the fun geometric prints on these Kate Spade shakers are T.D.F (to die for!)

Kate’s Fairmount Park Dot & Stripe Salt and Pepper Shakers marry preppy, deco and pop artsy seamlessly.  They would really complement the chicest penthouse dining table and the most eclectic studio with a table for two perfectly.

It almost makes me want to rethink my dining room colors to incorporate these into my table decor.  Hmmm….

Daily Covet: Anthropologie Willoughby Sofa

I need a new sofa.

Well, I need another sofa.

I love the sofa I have, but I am dying to add some bold color to my otherwise subdued living room.  And on a rainy day this week, I spent the day moving my furniture around and around to no avail.

This is the Willoughby sofa I have my eye on… in fact, Anthropologie has a whole gaggle of furniture I wouldn’t mind adding to my maison.

Take a good look at this lucious velvet sofa.  Isn’t it delish?

Daily Covet: Mini Mason Jar Sippers

Summer weather has finally started to rear it’s head around here.

That means backyard BBQ’ing and outdoor parties will soon become a reality – especially as we make our way toward my four-year-old’s birthday in early June and my own – GASP – 40th in July!

These mini Mason Jar sippers immediately caught my eye and made me long for the lazy days of summer and pink lemonade.  I picture a gaggle of sweaty 4-year-olds walking around sipping from cute red and white straws.

But who’s to say that these cute little jars wouldn’t make great high ball glasses filled with hard lemonade for the older set?

So many possibilities!
