Daily Covet: Flatform Flashback

I forget what I was searching this morning, but I ran across these basic, but wonderful flatform slides that are almost exactly like ones I had almost 15 years ago. And summer is calling my name. (Not sure why because we are getting snow 3x this week in middle America!)

Anywho…I wore those sandals by Nine West for years and had them repaired several times. The cross-foot band was made made from the softest leather; it was like sliding my bare foot into butter.

Sadly, my soft little sandals met their death when my cobbler said there was nothing more that he could do. I searched high and low for replacements, but never found any. It seems by the time I was ready to replace them, they weren’t the sandal of the moment anymore…. until now!

Not only did I find these amazing Stuart Weitzman sandals that are virtually an exact replica, I found other similar slides and sandals that have a bit of a lift without the crippling arches that so many absolutely gorge sandals tend to have.

Here is another pair from Robert Clergerie that I absolutely adore. They might actually be my favorite of the bunch with that extra braided band. You’ll notice these ain’t getting any cheaper….

I lied. These flatform sandals are quite a bit less and have a cute ankle strap so it’s easier to keep them on. The ankle strap makes them look a little bit dressier too, so they are ideal for pairing with summer dresses.

Should you like to go the espadrille route, this little peep toe model is perfect. They definitely scream summer, but the suede is super sophisticated – like for summers in the Hamptons.

Leave your wicker tote at home and choose these gorgeous sandals instead. The flatform makes them comfortable and the black and natural raffia construction make them cool. The name Clergerie? That makes them expensive.

Still feel like you’ll be falling off your flatforms? Try these black/gray sandals from Jil Sander. The demi flatform means you’ll be a lot closer to the ground in case your ankle are afraid of heights.

And last but certainly not least, these little numbers from Pour La Victoire are ideal if you really can’t decide between black and brown. They satisfy both cravings along with the need to show off cute ankles with the ankle straps.

Daily Covet: Interior Makeover

There are days – especially this time of year – when I get sick of looking at the same, old stuff every day.

These cold, gray days just make me want to toss everything in my house and start from scratch. Or maybe it’s the tent full of plastic balls, the BatBot or the stack of school papers…

It’s a good thing I have Polyvore, where money is no object and I can find virtually anything I need and want in my dream room. So here is what I’ve been working on.

Some favorites? Those Louis loveseats covered in Belgian linen and the glass console table with blue “X” stools tucked underneath.

Daily Covet: The Perfect White T

A friend and I were recently having a discussion about finding the perfect white t-shirt. There are a list of stipulations that the “perfect” tee must meet in order to indeed be the perfect tee.

It can’t be too heavy, but not too see-through either. It has to hold it’s shape well and not stretch out. The quality has to be such that the seams run in all the right directions (You know we’ve all had those cheaper-made tees that have seams that twist and turn around our torsos!)

The sleeves should be short enough to not get bunched up under our cardis or sweaters, but not so short that they show off the little bit of extra “pit fat” we’ve been trying to lose since we had our last baby (18 months ago for me!) A v-neck can’t be too deep, a crewneck can’t be too tight and we really don’t want a boatneck. It can’t be too clingy, but not too loose that it looks like a paper bag either.

The perfect white t-shirt has to be so perfect that we don’t have to replace it every year and so perfect that we actually want to buy several so that we’d never be without one. It has to wash up nicely (and be dryer-proof for her.) I lay everything out to air dry so that’s not an issue for me.

We even agreed that we’d pay considerably more for a t-shirt that looked great with everything.

So I’ve been doing some research and googling “perfect white t-shirt.” Most of the articles written on just that topic give quite a few options – but I’m unsure that the tees have actually been test-driven, so to speak.

Here are a few however that I’d like to try out. Or better yet – to hear from readers if you’ve had good or bad experiences. Or let me know which perfect white tee has worked out for you and why!

Daily Covet: H&M Pink Printed Coat

The fun part about today’s “Daily Covet” is that I actually am not coveting it anymore! I purchased this retro and totally fabulous H&M coat already – just in time for the Valentine’s Day brunch with my best gal pals. The Dolman sleeves and boxy shape are so 60’s but the collarless style also makes it look sort of asian-inspired. This cute, little number has opera-length sleeves and must-have pockets too. It’s absolutely perfect!

I styled it with boyfriend jeans, a j.crew factory Charley sweater in pale gray and pink suede pumps (old, very old kilty version.) I also wore my Anthropologie glass bubble necklace because the irridescent beads naturally catch the light to reflect pink and gray. Here’s the real thing, but the picture was a terrible “quick pic” I sent to a friend to tell her about my cool find. I included a better mock up of the outfit too.

Daily Covet: Ann Taylor Katarina Sandals

Not sure who Katarina is, but I love her sandals.

But seriously, these Ann Taylor sandals scream “SUMMER!” and I’m so ready for warmer weather – especially with a foot of snow on the Midwestern ground.

I love the pale gold color that would look great against summer-tanned feet. There’s a small heel for comfort mostly, and some metal detailing up top too… really a perfect spring break or summer sandal!

Daily Covet: Organic Matelassé Duvet Cover

A white duvet cover?

So what, why is she telling us this?

Well, let me tell you why I’m telling you.

Have you tried to find a non-100-percent cotton duvet cover lately?

I googled “cotton blend” and “polyester blend” and came up with either cotton or polyester… not both. But several years ago, my mom turned me on to cotton percale sheets that she said wouldn’t wrinkle like my cotton sheets did. Cotton-percale is also incredibly soft without the price tag of their Egyptian-cotton sisters with one billion threadcounts.

To rewind, my current all cotton Tiffany-blue duvet cover has seen better days. I bought it when we moved into our house. It’s been just shy of nine years. It’s wrinkled, discolored, faded and generally looks like crap.

I decided to convert to white because then my duvet cover can’t fade and washing it in my go-to OXY will keep it nice and crisp.

Long story short, when I ran across this Matelassé duvet cover in cotton-percale at WestElm.com I was thrilled.

And although “organic” was not a stipulation of said duvet cover, it can’t hurt right? Also, I love that it’s in a traditionally-French quilted design called Matelassé because… well, because I love all things French.

Daily Covet: Céline Havana Honey Sunglasses

I’ve always been a sucker for great sunglasses.

Maybe that’s because I absolutely have to wear them, rain or shine.

Yep, you read that right. It seems my eyes are especially sensitive to a gray day and start to water at the first unprotected glance of a cloudy sky.

So I am all about these Céline Havana Honey Sunglasses. I love the golden tortoise frames and the round lenses. I also love that they are so different from my usual cat’s eye or wrap around options.

There’s just something so Mr. Ripley about them…

Have you seen? Iris & Ink.

How did I miss the The Outnet’s private lable “Iris & Ink?”

Launched in 2012, Iris & Ink combines trendier pieces with wardrobe staples.

Overcoats, body-con dresses and a fab midi-length leather dress are stand outs in this ultra-cool collection that is really versatile style-wise and age-wise too.

I love that it’s designed with sophisticated lines and grown-up details, but still features edgier fabrics and prints for both the young and young-at-heart sets.

Here are some of my absolute faves…but really I’ll take one of each!

Daily Covet: Céline Box Bag

A Céline box bag.

What better bag than this structured, but unfussy, handbag in too many awesome colors to count?

I love the simplicity and the elegance of Céline’s simple crossbody bag. I also love that the shoulder strap can be tucked in so you have a dual-duty clutch.

The biggest problem (besides the hefty $2800 price tag) is how do you choose just one?

Daily Covet: Retro jean skirt

All my cleaning out and purging this past week has left me wanting a bit of nostalgia.

Retro for me generally brings me back to what I wore in high school. The dress code in Southern California was casual, to say the least. In fact, many days I looked like I rolled out of bed into athletic shorts (volleyball-style Mossimos and Quicksilver shorts were our go-tos at the time) and a “matching” t-shirt.

But some days, we’d really go all out and slip into a Guess jean skirt – mini, of course.

It occurred to me recently how versatile denim skirts really are. Back in the day, they were ideal for showing off our year-round tan, but these days they are likely to show off my every-day-is-a-casual-day life.

Obviously, there is no shortage of cute, denim skirts in an array of styles and washes. Leave it to Guess to have a very similar version to the one I wore more than 20 years ago.
