Oscars Wrap-up

I actually watched almost the entire Oscar show last night for the first time in years.  I used to be so much more into it because my husband and I were serious movie buffs and would see almost every (if not every) movie nominated!

This year, I attended a really great Oscar Party with some friends.  We noshed on sushi, drank chocolate martinis and had Barefoot Contessa coconut cupcakes.  Ok, so the food was the high point… but still, I think it was a pretty good show after all.

As most of you can guess, I watch it mainly for the gowns.  And I wasn’t disappointed last night.  There were a few iffy ensembles but even the bad ones were worn by really beautiful women.  Case and point:  Cate Blanchett, who is one of my favorites.  I loved her stunning skin and hair but her dress looked like one of those simulated videos of the fertilization of an egg.

And then there was Reece Witherspoon in a very unexciting black and white number with her “I Love Jeanie” ponytail… better suited for Legally Blonde.

My favorite gown of the night was worn by Gwyneth Paltrow, who just generally has really good style.  Her Calvin Klein sheath was simple but simply stunning.

My second favorite was Scarlett’s one of a kind Dolce & Gabbana gown.  I loved the color, the peekaboo lace.  In a word: Stunning!

And last but not least, in any sense of the word, Helen Mirren.  Her smokey taffeta Vivienne Westwood gown was subtle yet sexy and full of age-appropriate glamour.  She’s just radiant in anything but always has fantastic fashion instincts!

Daily Covet: Paris in the Springtime

My husband and I are celebrating our 7th anniversary this spring.   Unfortunately, the last two years have not been the most romantic anniversaries we’ve ever had.  Two years ago, I was laying in a hospital room hopped up on pain killers and magnesium, trying to stop our littlest guy from coming nine weeks early.  It didn’t work.

Last year, we had a big celebration to mark said little guy’s first birthday, a major milestone for a 3+ pound baby born on June 3rd, missing our sixth anniversary by one hour and 11 minutes.

So, I’m planning something this year.  If I had my way, we’d be spending a few days in Paris at the Hotel François 1er, near the Champs-Elysées.  I’d really like to get away (who wouldn’t?) for the entire week but it’s not likely in the cards for us… I’ll virtually plan it anyway!

Daily Covet: The smell of citrus

I spent some time in Southern California when I was a kid.  When we moved to Orange County, our Woodbridge neighborhood was still bordered by miles of orange groves.

I found this picture (which is actually taken in Santa Barbara) on an “affordable art” website but it immediately reminded me of those days in the late 80’s, when we would head down Irvine Center Drive.  Along one side of the road stood tall and straight rows of Eucalyptus trees with varying degrees of peeling bark and on the other,  stout little trees full with orange fruit.  The smell was fresh and amazing and I can still recall it to this day, every time I pull back the skin of a fresh orange.

Now, there is nothing but a sea of little pink condos and homes up for short sale and the booming Irvine Spectrum.  Maybe that’s why I was so drawn to this photo… it reminds me of a place, I used to call home, that just doesn’t exist anymore.

Daily Covet: Who knew lasers could be so pretty?

Givenchy George V Lace Apron Bag, Barney's $2480

This gorgeous Givenchy laser-cut leather bag showed up in my daily Barney’s email this morning.  I loved it immediately and had to post.

It’s high fashion but slouchy, delicate but tough, old fashioned but current and it’s lovely enough to wear with a spring maxi dress but unstructured enough to wear with ripped up jean shorts and your favorite t-shirt.

It’s a good thing it’s a timeless bag… because it’ll be a long time before I can convince my husband that I need it!

Daily Covet: The unattainable “Night out with the girls” frock

Milly May Combo Dress, Saksfifthavenue.com $225

I have a date with my best girls on March 5th.  We are going to see Mama Mia at our local beautiful theater and I need something very transitional for the occasion.

The midwest can offer up late winter days near 70 degrees or a flash in the pan snow storm.  I figured this little black dress on top with a hint of a pink party skirt on the bottom, would be perfect for the occasion.

I even went so far as to order the dress at Neiman Marcus online.  The last one they had (supposedly) was my size!

Shortly after placing my order, I was informed that it was cancelled due to the dress being sold out. Devastating to have built my hopes up in those few minutes I spent checking out, just to have them dashed with an impersonal email.

I guess I’ll have to find some old frock in my own closet… or set my sights on something else truly fabulous!
